Best Golf Grips for Seniors (for Pain-Free Play)

Welcome to ThinkVail – we hope you find this article about golf grips for seniors helpful.

The Vail Valley in Colorado, is home to lots of full time retirees as well as, second homeowners that love to spend their days at the golf course. If your older, and suffering from arthritis, hand fatigue, weak grip or a further disability, check out these golf grips that promise to make golfing more comfortable, enjoyable and hopefully pain-free.

A soft or super-soft rubber grip absorbs shock, increases comfort and reduces exertion by your hands when gripping the club. Oversize golf grips reduce pain and are recommended for players who have arthritis or experience hand strain because the bigger the grip, the less pressure your hands need to apply.

Keep in mind, that oversize grips may take some of the feel out of the club but the lack of shock on your joints will more than make up for that disadvantage.
Grips come in 4 sizes

  • Undersized for small hands,
  • Standard for most hands,
  • Midsize for larger hands
  • Oversize for larger hands or those who would like reduce wrist movement.

Depending on your hand size, a slightly larger grip should help reduce arthritis symptoms during play.

Texture

Grips are available in a variety of textures including ribs, cord or nubs, for wetter conditions or if your hands sweat a lot. There are also smooth and simple rubber grips. The texture increases comfort while decreasing the chance that the club will slip from your hands.

The right texture will also encourage a soft, more relaxed grip on the club that reduce tension and strain in your arms, hands and joints.

Some of these grips are sold as kits so you can change grips yourself, if pain makes you unable to change out your own grips, just take them to your local pro shop, golf  supply store and they can do it for you.

My wife and I are planning on retiring to Vail later next year.  We have a second home in the area and  love to come for skiing and golf.  We are very excited to play more golf at altitude, and try all of the courses in the area because there are some spectacular ones.  I am not even sure if I know all of the golf courses in the Vail Valley but can’t wait to get started. I have a touch of arthritis but it usually doesn’t interfere with my game. However, I am wondering if I shouldn’t start looking at this type of grip to help keep my arthritis from getting worse, almost as a preventative. I need some new grips and feel like this might help keep me playing longer.  Thanks for this  very eye-opening information and list of awesome grips.

Hi Christian, welcome to the neighborhood, full-time, and congratulations on your upcoming retirement.  I have a few things that might be helpful to you, since you are moving to the area.  First off, you may want to check out the post Golf Courses in the Vail Valley. It’s an article that describes all of the golf courses in the Vail Valley and whether they are public, private or semi-private.  Also now that you will be playing at altitude more often you may want to check out the article Top Rated Soft Golf Balls because soft golf balls are the best to play at high altitude and it will also tell you why. Lastly, I believe you have the right idea to use these types of grips before you may really need them as they will help with the fluidity of your swing, keep your grip loose, reduce shock and just be all around better for your hands and help the arthritis that you currently have and hopefully keep it from getting inflamed.  Good luck with this new chapter of your life-HAVE FUN!

Thank you so much for this post about the best golf grips for seniors. I don’t play golf as often as I wish, but my dad is a fanatic and he really loves his country club and still plays golf most days even though he is almost 75. He hasn’t changed his grips in a few years, and it’s time so I’m planning on getting one of these grips for him. I think a softer, slightly larger grip would be welcomed.  I really liked the SuperStroke Cross Comfort Golf Grips and I think I’ll be getting those for him. He’ll be very happy since this grip also enhances performance and seems soft and comfortable. Thank you!

    • ThinkVail

Hi Henderson yes the SuperStroke Cross Comfort Golf Grips are perfect for the older golfer who does not suffer from arthritis, hand fatigue or hand weakness.  These are performance enhancers grips that are soft, comfortable and  have a great, tacky, non-slip outer layer. These will probably be very similar to what he has been using just more comfortable. Great idea for a birthday gift for your Dad!

  • Abayomi

Great article on the best golf grips for seniors, these oversized grips helps the golfer to play with all comfortably. I have really bad arthritis that puts a huge damper on my game.  With ordinary grips, I just can’t play, there is just too much shock on my joints but with jumbo oversized grips (and a couple of Ibuprofen) I can be back in the game.  A soft or super-soft rubber grip absorbs shock, increases comfort and reduces exertion by your hands when gripping the club. Its really helped me have a much better experience.  All the products you showed are awesome, but currently my favorites are the Avon Chamois jumbo golf grips. Thank you for sharing this helpful post.

    • ThinkVail

Hi Abayomi, thanks so much for sharing your story and your experiences.  I am so happy to hear that the Avon Chamois jumbo golf grips have worked so well for you.  I have another friend, who also swears by them.  Thanks again for chiming in and giving us your two cents- it’s much appreciated.

Thanks for this informative article about the best golf grips for seniors. I am sixty seven years old and have been playing golf most of my life and love it and plan to spend the next twenty years playing golf with my husband now that we are both retired.  However, within the last few years I have noticed a significant loss in power, speed, and accuracy with my swing which is beyond frustrating.  I don’t have any pain but I can’t get the same results that I use to.  My friend with arthritis swears by bigger golf grips and has recommended them to me so I am searching for a pair to try and see if it can help my swing as well.  I am looking at the Golf Pride grips or the Winn Dri Tacks. I have used regular Winn grips in the past and loved them so I may be leaning towards them a little more.

    • ThinkVail

Hi Marla, thank you for your kind comments  towards the post about the best golf grips for seniors.  Yes, as they say “Getting older isn’t for sissies” Seeing a decrease in power, speed and accuracy can be very frustrating and hopefully these grips can help you get back some of what you have lost.  Both of the grips you are interested in should work great for you, they are both nice soft, slightly oversized grips that will help absorb shock, keep your grip soft and be very comfortable to swing.  Just keep in mind that senior grips can get really oversized or jumbo and if ,as a woman, you have smaller hands you want to make sure the grip doesn’t get to big for your hands. You may have to try a couple till you find the one that feels right to you..

  • Edward

Great article about the best golf grips for seniors. These grips do wonders for arthritis. Giving that wider grip put your hands in a stronger position so you can have an easier time gripping the golf club. Also, they keep the golf club from turning in your hands when you hit the ball, if that has been an issue for you. That way you don’t have to grip the golf club any harder to compensate for the turning.
They even provide good shock absorption which will help prevent golfer’s elbow. I got golfer’s elbow and it put me out of the game for a while. I have to do all this for arm Rehabilitation which is probably a good thing anyway because now my forearms are much stronger. But maybe if I had been using these grips I wouldn’t have gotten golfer’s elbow to begin with.

    • ThinkVail

Hi Edward thank you so much for sharing your experience using these types of bigger, wider golf grips.  I have never heard of golf elbow, although what your describing does does make sense, and yes, I can see how these grips would help alleviate that issue or help you avoid it altogether if you started before you had any pain. Very interesting I will have to do some more research on this, thanks for bringing it to our attention. I am glad you are feeling better and stronger better and I am so glad you are hitting the greens again.
