Ladies, you know that nothing is more important than a good-fitting ski sock that keeps your feet warm, dry, comfortable and blister-free but finding the right ski sock is more like an art form than a science. To choose the best ski socks, you must consider the following:

Material

What your sock is made of is sooooooo important. Merino wool is the best choice, it is a proven fiber that offers breathability and comfort in all conditions. Merino wool will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet or clammy. It will keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It has amazing wicking properties that absorbs sweat and moisture and keeps it away from your skin.

Merino wool is not itchy, it is wonderfully soft and smooth. Any sock you pick should have a good amount of Merino wool, other great materials that compliment merino wool is polypropylene, spandex or Lycra (for added stretch), nylon and polyester fibers.

Merino wool socks are far superior than cotton socks for keeping you dry and comfortable.

Material Weight

Ultra Lightweight Socks – Performance socks. They are perfect if you are an avid, experienced skier who owns your own custom ski boots or has close-fitting boots. These socks are very thin relying on the insulation qualities of the custom ski boot insert to help keep your feet warm.  Because they are thin they do not add additional material and do not bunch up or pack out the boot, the way a thick sock does.  They are also perfect for people who are naturally warm most of the time.

Lightweight Socks – Not as thin as ultra lightweight socks, they have a higher percentage of wool and therefore, more insulation as well as additional cushioning on the shin and under the foot, to reduce heel lift. This is the most popular weight for skiers looking for a good sock.

Midweight Socks – The best socks if your feet are just always cold. If you are looking for warmth and lots of it, look to the midweight. Midweight consists of the highest percentage of merino wool to keep your feet toasty warm and dry. Midweight also offers lots of cushioning and the extra volume of material to reduce foot movement in the boot.

Seamless Toe

Unlike regular socks, good ski socks should not have a seam at the toe, usually it is higher, lying on top of the toe. This is important because there is nothing more irritating than feeling a seam right at your toe where the boot keeps pressing against it. It will cause chafing, discomfort and eventually sore spots. Seamless socks gives you a nice clean toe box that will make your day on the slopes much more comfortable

OTC Design

A taller over the calf sock. You want to have material or cushioning between your leg and the entire ski boot, a tall OTC design does just that. Theses socks also utilize banding which is just elastic to keep the sock up so it doesn’t fall down in your boot and become annoying. Some socks have multiple areas of banding for lots of reliability that your sock will stay high.

  • Hello thank you so much for all of this information on the best ski socks for women.  To be honest I was searching for really warm socks and thought that probably the most warm type of socks would be ski socks.  My wife has poor circulation and her feet are always really cold so I have been researching the best socks to keep her warm.  I was totally impressed by the heated socks-what a great idea!  I didn't even know they made heated socks.  I think this might be just the right answer for my wife.  I am going to purchase them for her and let her give them a try and will let you know how they worked out for her. I might even purchase a pair for me for when I go hunting in the fall and it's pretty cold.  Thanks again, this post is a great resource!

  • Ski socks are so important, and often overlooked.I love the Point6 Ski and Snowboard Sock, because of its medium thickness and high thread count. I like thicker socks that will keep me warm and offer lots of cushioning.  Thanks for this list of the best ski socks for women, it's spot on!

    • Hi Peace yes the Point6 Ski & Snowboard Sockis awesome. It is made by the same people who founded Smartwool socks.  They sold their company and started this new company called Point6. Although relatively new, they are putting out an amazing product.  I think you will really like these socks. Enjoy!

  • OMG Love the Eurosocks!  They are such cute socks.  A great variety of vibrant colors.  These are performance socks with a strong spirit of fun. Usually socks are the last things I think about but with fun patterns like these, I think this is about to change.  Thanks for opening my eyes up to the fact that ski socks needn't be boring.

    • Hi JealousiLi so happy you found socks you like from the list of Best Ski Socks for Women. The Eurosocks are women specific socks and you can tell because they are fun, feminine with bright colors but they also keep working to keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable

  • I have to show this post about the best ski socks for women to my wife. We LOVE to cross country ski and spend most winter weekends doing that.  However, it is very hard to find good socks here in our area. We had a good shop here but the owners retired and closed up shop and nothing has replaced it. So it is a blessing you came up with this review, I'm going to show this to her so we can stock up on some good socks.  All of our current warm, winter socks now have holes in the heels and we desperately need to replace them.  Love that it links right to Amazon so we can order online and just have them delivered.  Thanks a lot for sharing it with us!

    • Hi Emmanuel I am so happy that this article helped you and I am sorry you lost your local connection for warm ski socks.  Although this article is focused on women's ski socks, brands like Smartwool, Point6 and Darn Tough also offer ski socks for men, so you can both replace your old socks. This is a great time to get stocked up for next winter's adventures.

  • Great post about the best women's ski socks.  I am a competitive skier and am always on the lookout for great socks.  I like my socks super thin, I want very little material between my boot and my foot, so the Ultralights would be perfect.  I have great boot inserts so I don't really worry about cold feet, I just worry about rubbing, hot spots and blisters.  I am really interested in the FITS Ultralight Ski Socks.  I have teammates who wear these socks but I haven't personally tried them myself. Thanks for turning me onto a new sock.

    • As a competitive skier ultralights are a great choice, and FITS ski socks have lots of features that keep them ahead of the pack like a patented heel lock, to keep your heel from moving up and down inside your ski boot, vented foot tops and compression. Also because it is so lightweight it will not back out your fine boot inserts and they will last longer.  Enjoy these socks they will enhance your performance!
