Measuring your Dog

  • Back: Measure length of pet’s back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
  • Neck: Measure the circumference of pet’s neck for a snug fit.

  • Thank you for the great list of winter Dog Coats. I have a 60 lb. Pitbull mix and although I think of him as a big dog and one that would not need a coat I find that he starts to shiver after just a few minutes in the snow so I am thinking a dog coat could really benefit him

    • Hi Nila
Thanks for your comment. Yes shivering is a definite sign that your dog needs an extra layer. Pit bulls are usually very muscular so not much fat to keep them warm and they have short, thin hair that doesn't really insulate as well as some other breeds. I think your dog would be very happy with a doggie coat. Since he is a pit bull I would suggest a strap with a buckle instead of velcro because they are so powerful. I would suggest the Derby Waterproof Insulated Dog Coat or the Huertta Extreme Weather Dog Coat.

  • This is a great post that gave me some great Christmas gift ideas. My parents love to use coats with their dog. I believe the dog weights around 10 lbs so I'm thinking the PETCEE Waterproof Dog Coat. Does that coat work for that small of a dog? They like to walk the dog in almost any weather which is why this one appeals to me.

    • Dear Dave,
Thank you for your suggestion! Yes, these winter dog coats make GREAT Christmas presents and you can use them right away since it's usually snowy or rainy that time of year. The PETCEE Waterproof Dog Coat is a great choice but keep in mind you need to measure your dog's chest girth, neck girth and back length for the correct fit it is not really based on weight. Think about how a Dachshund, Schnauzer and a Pug all have such different builds so even if they were the same weight they would each need a different coat. There is a size chart that goes along with each coat at the Amazon website.

  • What a great article! I like the variety of winter dog coats that you described, it's very easy to compare and decide.
I'm still a bit indecisive; we have a Great Dane and I do not know which model shall I choose. Can you recommend something?

    • Hi Dany,
So glad you liked the variety of Dog Coats on the list. Oh, I love that you have a Great Dane, they are such beautiful dogs and although they are really large dogs they are usually thin and have short hair so a winter dog coat would keep them very comfortable Even though normally, we think BIG dogs don't really need coats. Because size is such an issue here I would go with the Derby Waterproof Insulated Dog Coat because it fits like the popular horse blanket, which means plenty of room for long legs, and big chests. Also it straps with an actual buckle and not Velcro that can come off more easily, especially when playing hard. It has chest and belly adjusters and is a really nice no-nonsense dog coat, I think you'll love it!
