When school’s out, we parents are always looking for safe, enjoyable ways for our kids to burn off some energy. A really fun way to do this, is by giving your kiddo a scooter. Kids as young as two can bee seen cruising around the playground under their parent’s watchful eyes but as they get older and more experienced, scooters allow kids to have a greater sense of freedom and gain confidence as they become better riders. Here’s 9 great scooter ideas to get your kids started in this fun activity
Types of Scooters
Kicker Style Scooters
kick scooter has a skateboard-like deck that you stand on, while gripping the handlebars and swinging your leg in a kicking motion to propel yourself forward. Perfect for kids (and adults) to cruise on. They are ideal for smooth terrain (pavements, parks etc) but not on grass. They are not the best choice for tricks, stunts or jumps.
Pro Scooters
Trick scooters that are more durable than kick scooters. Generally they cannot be height adjusted and cannot be folded. They are heavier and have advanced compression systems and are designed for stability, tricks, flips and vert riding.
Folding Scooters
Much easier to carry or to pack away in car trunks or overhead bins on airplanes when traveling
Electric Scooters
Powered by a rechargeable battery and an electric motor they are generally heavier than other scooters. But they are more stable and do not require kids to physically push them. Electric scooters are more expensive and designed for commuting, not for stunt riding.
Important Scooter Features
Wheel Size
Scooters with two wheels of the same size are more stable and go faster. Scooters with a front wheel that’s larger than the back wheel are more maneuverable but less agile. Basic scooters generally have 100mm but you can get wheels up to 125mm for more performance.
Scooter Decks
Most scooter decks are made of aluminum. Aluminum is durable but not indestructible. Larger scooter are more comfortable for taller, bigger riders, while smaller decks are lighter and easier to perform tricks.
Brakes
Foot brakes that press on the rear wheel to stop and are ideal for kid’s scooters, as they aren’t as powerful and reduce the risk of flipping the scooter when your kiddo stops suddenly. Hand brakes are better for experienced riders or adults.
Spring Bake is a very standard type of brake, often found on scooters in lower end of the price range.
Flex Fender is more durable than a spring brake and is often found on higher end scooters
Fixed Fender means you use your shoe to brake and stop instead a classic scooter brake
