How to Buy Marijuana in Colorado

Possession

In Colorado, if you are an adult 21 years of age or older, you can now legally possess

  • One (1) ounce of Flower – OR –
  • Eight (8) grams of Concentrate – OR –
  • 800 Mg of Edibles

You will need a government-issued identification to prove you are 21 years or older, so a driver’s license or passport is an absolute MUST.

Purchasing Limits

Both tourists and residents can purchase 28 grams in a single transaction.

Where Can You Smoke?

Once you make your first purchase of buds the next question is: “Where can I smoke my weed?” The new law does NOT permit the consumption of marijuana “openly and publicly.” So do NOT blaze while walking down the street, or in a hotel lobby. You can get a ticket for smoking Marijuana in public, it is very similar to open container laws for drinking in public. Discretion is appreciated, and usually required.

Driving Under the Influence

A new DUI law is in effect in Colorado which sets a legal limit for the amount of active THC in your system while driving. The legal limit is 5 nanograms per milliliter of blood. Don’t drive while under the influence. Also, the “open container” law in Colorado makes it illegal to possess marijuana in the passenger area of a vehicle. So if your passenger has an open container, a container with broken seals, or if there is evidence of consumption you will be breaking the law.

Not on Federal Lands

It is illegal to possess marijuana at National Parks, Forests, Monuments or other federal properties. Many ski areas are located on federal land (usually just the actual ski runs on the mountain). Possession of marijuana on federal land is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000 on the first offense.

Cultivation

The law allows residents 21 years of age or older to cultivate up to 6 plants, 3 of which can be in the flowering stage in an enclosed, locked space

Keep in mind that laws do change so, please use this information only as a guideline and confirm all information with a knowledgeable marijuana dispensary employee or Marijuana Tour Guide for all current laws regarding marijuana.

OK, so now you know the rules and you are ready to buy some green bud and enjoy your first legal, 420 smoke session, where do you go?

Marijuana & CBD

CBD and traditional Marijuana are very different cannabis items and are used in different applications.

Traditional Marijuana contains THC, this natural psychoactive compound creates the” high” sensation that we are all familiar with. This high can be achieved by smoking marijuana. It’s is also found in oils, edibles, tinctures and capsules. THC is usually used recreationally for relaxation and to reduce anxiety and stress.

CBD is extracted from cannabis plants that contain less than 0.3 percent THC, so it does not create a “high” or euphoric feeling.  CBD is sold as gels, gummies, oils, supplements and extracts.  It is well-tolerated by the body and is used medicinally for a variety of ailments including:

  • inflammation
  • pain/muscle stiffness
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • nausea
  • migraines

Keep in mind that both marijuana and CBD are legal in Colorado but if you travel with cannabis-related products, to any other place where these products are illegal , you could face legal penalties. Also, know that both compounds will show up in a drug test, so be aware.

  • I live in Canada but plan to come to Colorado in the spring. This article gave me a lot of information. I am very interested in the Dispensary Tour as I have never bought marijuana before and have no idea what I would need to do.  I love that I would have a "guide" to help tell me what I need to do and what questions to ask. Thank you for sharing this informative article with all of us.

    • Hello and thanks for your comment and I hope you have a wonderful time visiting Colorado.  Yes Colorado Marijuana Dispensary Tours are very informational, fun and personalized to what you want and need.  Don't worry to much about not knowing anything.  Lots of people who come are in the same boat. The Budtenders at the Dispensaries  are there to help and guide you through your purchase. "Budtenders" are people who work at the dispensary counter that are trained to answer all your questions and can help you even if you don't know what questions to ask.

  • Great article about what is legal and illegal about Colorado Marijuana . I have cousins who live in a Colorado and I like to visit them every year. Although my brother smokes marijuana in public, I would not do that. I do have a question, I want to ask is it somehow possible to transfer marijuana outside of Colorado legally?

    • Hello Daniel,

Thank for your comments.  Please do not smoke pot in public, it is illegal and you can get in trouble for doing that so please make sure you tell your brother that too.  Marijuana can only be smoked on private property (with the owners approval) and it is best done discreetly.

To your question, no, currently there is no way transfer marijuana outside of Colorado, that is illegal and you can get in a lot of trouble.  It is only legal in the state of Colorado.

  • This was a very interesting post. I wonder if  smoking legal marijuana in public is considered a crime?  Alss for a newbie like me, which dispensary would you recommend as the best option? If I were to step into  a dispensary, I wouldn't know anything about the different strands of weed. So I would basically need an entire walk-through.

    • Hi Jasmine,

Great questions, thank you.  First off, you must remember that although pot is legal in Colorado, smoking or ingesting it in public is a big no-no.  It is illegal unless you are on private property where the owner approves its usage.

To your second point, don't worry about being a newbie. The people who work at the dispensaries are use to working with newbies. They love to talk about pot, and different strains, edibles, waxes, shatters, flowers, extracts and they will explain EVERYTHING and walk you through a successful purchase. All the dispensaries are knowledgeable and trustworthy, you can't go wrong with any of them although I do love Roots RX shuttle service where they will actually pick you up and if you don't have a place where you can safely smoke your new product you can do so in their shuttle.
