IMPORTANT FEATURES
POWER SOURCE
First, consider where and how you will be pumping up your SUP.
If your plan is to fill it once and drive around with it on the top of your car or in the back of your truck then you can use a pump that plugs into the wall in your home.
If you want to inflate it and deflate it in the parking lot every time than a cigarette lighter(12-volt outlet) or battery alligator clips allow you to power the pump easily from your car.
Lastly, if the plan is to take your SUP camping, or transport it by bicycle or take it with you on a raft trip that you will want a rechargeable, portable battery that you can use anywhere.
12 Volt Cigarette Lighter – Allows easy inflation by plugging into your car’s12 volt outlet (cigarette lighter).
Alligator Clips – Allows you to plug directly into your vehicle’s (or any external) battery
Rechargeable Battery – Conveniently allows you to pump up ANYWHERE, even in remote locations because the rechargeable battery is portable so you can carry it with you. This is the most versatile but will also generally be the most expensive option.
VALVE COMPATIBILITY
Generally, inflatable SUP boards have Halkey-Roberts valves, H3, HR or H-valve but some boards do rely on other systems. Check what kind of valve to ensure that your new pump does come with the correct adapter.
Usually, pumps come with a variety of adapters to ensure they are compatible with your particular inflatable water sports equipment.
Additional pump valves include a military valve, a bravo, double lock, pinch, Boston, or Leafield valve. Make sure the pump you want features a valve design that matches what you want to use it with.
SINGLE vs. TWO-STAGE
First, decide whether a single-stage or two-stage (dual stage) pump is the best fit for your needs. Single-stage pump models have constant air flow but are less efficient because the resistance is quite high when the air is pumped directly from one end to the other.
Two-stage models work slightly differently, air is sucked in at one end and compressed, and therefore allowing it to be pumped faster into the board but it generally makes it more expensive.
However, keep in mind that more powerful pumps also create more noise.
MULTIPLE BOARDS
