SPF
SPF rates how much production you receive against UVB rays (burning rays).
SPF 15 protects against 93% of UVB rays
SPF 30 guards against 97% of UVB rays
SPF 50 protects against 98%of UVB rays
SPF 100 guards against 99% of UVB rays
Types of Sunscreen
Traditional sunscreens use chemicals like avobenzone, octinoxate and oxybenzone to absorb the sun’s UV rays, then convert those rays into heat, and releases them from the body.
Mineral sunscreen physically block the sun’s rays. Ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, sit on top of the skin to block the sun’s rays from the body.
Bad Chemicals
Oxybenzone is a chemical that is absorbed into the body through the bloodstream and can disrupt the hormone system. Oxybenzone, is also a synthetic molecule that is known to be toxic to corals, algae, sea urchins, fish and mammals. States like Hawaii are banning this chemical.
Avoid sunscreens with Vitamin A as data is showing tumors and lesions develop sooner on skin coated with creams laced with vitamin A
If using mineral based sunscreens look for non-nano products. Nano particles are so small they can easily enter the bloodstream, however, a non-nano is larger and is unable to enter the bloodstream, so it is safer.
How to Apply
Sunscreen sprays make applying sunblock easy and convenient but they can be dangerous if not used correctly.
Do not breathe the contents as you spray, as some sunscreen ingredients can be lung irritants. Be especially wary if you are spraying titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide, when inhaled in large amounts, has been linked to cancer in rodents.
Avoid spraying directly on young children, instead, spray the product into your hands and rub it onto the child’s skin.
Avoid sprays on windy days.
Do not use sprays if you’re going to be near an open flame ( like a bonfire or bbq grill). Sprays can, literally, burn you because many sunscreens contain alcohol, which is flammable.
Here in Vail, Colorado the elevation is 8,150 feet above sea level, we are so close to the sun, sometimes I feel we can reach out and touch it. For that very reason, because we are so close to the sun, it is important to wear a good sunscreen every day. Find the right product for you and then get out and hike, bike, ski, picnic, golf or any of the other tons of fun things to do outside, knowing you are protected from harmful UV rays.

What did you think of this list of the Top Rated Spray Sunscreens? Is your favorite on this list? Which kind of sun protection do you prefer mineral or a more traditional chemical sunblock. We would love to hear your thoughts, comments and stories about sunscreen or epic sunburns!
Great article about top rated spray sunscreens! All this while, I have been using sunblock lotion and not thought of using sprays, silly me. This is so much more convenient. The only thing I look for when buying is the SPF. Thanks to your article, I now know I should be checking the product label more carefully. I bet not many people know about the effect of Vitamin A in sunscreen. Now, I am going to go through your recommended list again to decide which to buy.
Thanks again.
Hi Sharon, I am so happy you found the post about top rated sunscreens helpful. Yes spray sunscreen can be so convenient. SPF is super important as is wether you prefer a traditional chemical sunscreen or a mineral based sunscreen. Being that I live up here in Vail. Colorado, I am partial to Rocky Mountain Sunscreenas it was created to block the sun's rays at altitude in harsh conditions in both winter and summer, I also love that it comes in BIG quantities if you need it, has a pump-action spray bottle for easy application, and is based right here in Colorado.
Thank you for the article about top rated spray sunscreens. I have been looking for a good mineral-based sunscreen that is not cancer-causing and also will not damage the reefs or the environment, not an easy chore. I loved all the options you suggested and made it so easy for me to find what I need which is the Replenix Sheer Sunscreen. It checks all the boxes and now all i need are a new pair of sunglasses and I will be summer-ready. Thanks so much for this list, it made a complicated subject very easy to navigate.
So happy to hear that you were able to find just the right sunscreen from the list of top rated spray sunscreens. The Replenix Sheer Sunscreen is a winner! Since it is a physical sunscreen it does not contain the harmful oxybenzone chemical that they think might be hurting the coral reefs. This is a great sunscreen that goes on clear with no white residue. Lastly, it is a pump spray so you don't have to worry as much about inhaling airborne particles as you do with a continuous, aerosol spray. Enjoy the sunscreen and if you need tips on sunglasses check out the article "Best Dark, Polarized Sunglasses for Women"
