Winter is known for its slippery, icy, slushy, snow conditions that are perfect for a fall. Protect yourself with these 10 suggestions to increase your traction this winter and prevent a fall.

Here in Vail, Colorado, we have no lack of snow, ice and slippery conditions throughout the winter months. I have myself, accidentally fallen, and badly hurt my jaw, so I know, firsthand, how important it is to have footwear that reduces your chance of slipping and injury no matter what your winter activity.

Ice cleats, crampons and micro spikes are portable footwear that slips over and securely attaches to your shoes, sneakers or boots to reduce your chance of slipping, whether you are walking the dog, running, shopping, shoveling, ice fishing, hiking or just afraid of slipping on ice in the parking lot.  They are a great choice for elderly people, people who have sustained a previous fall and those who want extra traction for outdoor adventures like mountaineering or back-country hiking.

There are different types of over the boot ice cleats for different types of applications. Usually, the bigger the steel cleats or teeth, the more aggressive the bite, and the better the traction

Crampons

Crampons can tackle super icy, steep slopes and keep you from slipping, just like chains on a tire. They are perfect for hardcore outdoor recreational activities such as winter hiking as well as demanding professional outdoor activities such as mailmen, first responders and road crew employees.

Ice Cleats

Ice Cleats offer good over all usage, they are good for a variety of activities and winter conditions. They are usually attached using a flexible rubber frame that holds spikes, steel studs or a coiled chain. Steel studs and Spikes usually work best, have a better bite and grip better.

Microspikes

Microspikes are best for running and jogging, shoveling and other less demanding applications. This footwear allows smaller spikes or traction beads to be fastened with a special slip-on harness to the soles of shoes and boots. The smaller spikes or beads don’t work quite as well for people under 120 lbs as there may not be enough body weight cause enough downward pressure for good traction.

Generally, footwear is attached by a rubber frame or a nylon strap that sits over the shoe or boot. The nylon strap is usually easiest to take on and off.

  • Great article about the best over-the-boot ice cleats.  I have just moved from Florida to Colorado and I am very nervous about icy conditions in the winter.  I am a runner and love to run most days and expect to do so throughout the winter but  slippery, icy, slushy, snow conditions can easily lead to a fall so I am opting for some additional traction.  I don't really think that I need something as aggressive as  chains or BIG cleats (although I may change my mind in a few months) so I am leaning towards the Limm Ice Cleats.  I like the microspikes and they seem lightweight but still durable and they seem as if they would easily slip over my running shoes without impeding them ... too much. Thanks for sharing these helpful suggestions and I will let you know how it goes this winter!.

    • Hi Paul, I am so happy you enjoyed this post about the best over the boot ice cleats and yes, the Limm ice cleats are a great choice for winter runners. The Due North Everyday G3 and the Quik Solve Gripper Spikes would also be good options.  I think having some extra traction while you get use to our Colorado winters is a great idea as I can't tell you how many times I have fallen just in the parking lot or right outside of my door because of an icy patch.  Good luck and have fun running - stay safe!
